Student Survey Results 2006

Information about the Survey

A survey with a shared set of questions was made available via the system to students between the 28th August and the 15th September 2006. Four universities agreed to share their results, including UNSW.

These results are below, as well as what the University is doing in response to these results

We thank all the students who participated and hope that reports and visible direct action on the student feedback received will encourage even more feedback in the future.

174 students submitted responses to this survey from UNSW.

Service changes in response to the survey

The main areas targeted to meet the survey results are:

Area of comment Action in Response
More Podcasting

We are encouraging the Academics to make Podcasting available for more courses. In 2007, Lectopia will allow for more than one podcasting option when video is also recorded. If you want podcasting, please request this from your lecturers, as it is their decision.

Copyright also plays a role in whether podcasts and download formats can be available. If certain content is in lectures, they can be made available for streaming, but not via download. The Academics and teaching staff can contact Learning and Teaching @ UNSW or the copyright office for information regarding this.

Improve the volume

The volume variations and the incidences of blank recordings are due to the nature of the audio setup in the lecture theatres. This is something we have been aware of for some time and have made significant progress in with the department that looks after the teaching spaces 'Venues & Events' (previously known as CATS).

The Bio Med theatres have the new audio that solves this issue, and the CLB theatres have now been upgraded. A few other problematic theatres are also being upgraded, and others as part of general refurbishment are having this fixed as well. Other theatres will eventually be fixed over time.

Screen Capture Technology We are trying to have Screen Capture recording capabilities in CLB, Clancy and Ritchie before the end of 2009. The Screen Capture recording will be of whatever is shown over projector 1if used. Further information will be sent to academics and teaching staff when this service improvement is available.

The Text Responses

Not all participants in the survey filled out the text based questions, and we thank those who did.

An analysis and grouping of the textual responses in the survey reveal:

65 comments were that it has a positive impact on learning.
Of these, 35 referred to Lectopia as an aid to understanding and review, as part of their study.
13 specifically mentioned use for exam revision
6 mention that it is useful if they miss lectures because of illness
5 specifically mention that it helps because they have work commitments which cause them to miss lectures sometimes.
Only two responses included a negative impact, which in both cases was an admission that Lectopia sometimes makes them lazier about attending lectures

There was a large set of responses that asked for Podcasting and better volume control in the recordings.
